Herne Bay Houses
NZIA 2009 Auckland Architecture Awards Winner
The project explores the theme of "dwelling" in the inner city, establishing a dialog between a fortress-like raw concrete super-structure and warm, expressive interior elements that appeal to the senses. The duality maps and repeats in miniature a dominant urban experience of seeking refuge in niches that are only a wall or a threshold away from the cacophony of the city. Robust materials and subdued surface finishes have been used with extensive attention to building detailing and build quality.

Two live-work units turn the disadvantages of a long narrow site into advantages, particularly in regard to outlook. The varied views are put to good effect to give a different internal character to the two units. The dialogue between exposed concrete structural panels and natural materials enliven the exterior form and interior spaces. The project offers proof the maligned cross lease solution does work in the hands of a good architect.
