Milford Beach House
2020 Master Builders House of the Year
Gold Award Winner — Regional
Set “one back” from the beach and opposite a popular park on Auckland North Shore, this house seeks to engage with both site conditions in an open and reciprocal way, whilst creating a private haven for the owners.
The house style references the optimism of 60’s modernism that was prevalent in the area during the construction boom after the Harbour Bridge was built.
The kitchen and dining area are set around a lower floor courtyard and pool, but the main living area is on the upper floor to take advantage of the views and allow for some separation for the parents from their teenage children.
The design presents varying degrees of screening and openness to the street, with an integrated garage door that avoids a “back-of-the-house” public face.
